6 Do's And Dont's For Quarantine

It’s a really unusual time right now where many countries around the world are in lockdown, spending more time indoors and adapting to a completely new lifestyle so abruptly. It’s important to keep your mind active and remain as calm and happy as possible but it can be hard to find what to do when you’re basically at home all day, everyday!

Although there is no correct way of spending your quarantine (given that you obey your country’s lockdown rules), I have compiled a short list of do’s and don’t that will hopefully help you make the most of this time at home and maintain a healthy routine to keep you feeling your best.

DO make time for yourself!

If you’re working from home then you have an advantage of more time in your day due to no commuting to the office. You can dedicate this extra time to do all those things you previously wanted to do but couldn’t because of your busy lifestyle. This could be anything from cooking new meals, spending more time with family/friends, scheduling in at-home pamper days or spending more time on a passion project.

DO pick up a new hobby or revisit an old one!

As stated in the above point, you can use your “extra” time to learn how to code, start a blog, learn how to play chess or even paint! Even though you might think of a lot of hobbies which involve teamwork/going outside, there are so many other hobbies you can start at the comfort of your own home and/or with the internet! Check out Youtube’s Spotlight #WithMe channel for lots of interesting content that might inspire you.

DO try out new recipes

If you’re craving a chicken katsu curry from your favourite restaurant, why not challenge yourself and make one? Experiment with different cuisines - you might find a new recipe which could become your new signature dish (which you can then make for your family/friends at a dinner party post-quarantine). Check out Behind the Steam , Recipe Tin Eats and The Chutney Life for some delicious, easy to follow recipes!

DO exercise and keep your body active

Gyms are closed but there are tonnes of resources like Fitbit, Nike’s NTC app or even Youtube where you can follow weightless at-home workouts for free! Even if you only spend 20-30 mins a day, it is better than nothing. This period shouldn’t be an opportunity to neglect your health, but a reminder of how important your health is. I realised how much I love yoga after trying it properly for the first time last week, I don’t think I would have tried it out if it wasn’t for the gyms being closed!

DO spend time getting ready!

It may be tempting to not do your hair/makeup/wear pyjamas all day if you are working from home but if these simple things uplift your mood, who’s to say you can’t do it! You have more time in a day to try out different hairstyles or makeup looks without having to worry that you need to leave the house if it all goes wrong. It’s nice to get ready some days in the week to uplift your mood and feel less sluggish…and obviously to take some selfies.

DO stay in touch with family and friends

Thanks to technology and instant messaging, it’s really easy to keep in contact with family and friends. Host a quiz night with your friends or show your parents the new recipe you just tried! Even if you aren’t feeling lonely during this quarantine, someone you know might be so don’t forget to check up on your loved ones.

DON’T spend every evening watching back-to-back episodes on Netflix

This routine can easily make you feel sluggish and there are many other activities you can do in your home that are also fun! The odd movie marathon might be fun occasionally but it’s not ideal to treat every night like it’s a Friday night movie night.

DON’T snack all day

You might be sitting a walk away from your kitchen but don’t snack because its right there or because you feel bored. There are no benefits to this!! If you do feel like you need a snack, limit your sweet treats and opt for healthier snack alternatives throughout the day.

DON’T spend all your saved money on alcohol and the next ASOS sale

Everything is so uncertain now with many industries suffering meaning employees being furloughed or even losing their jobs entirely. It’s much wiser to use this time to save more money where you can and top up your ISA/sinking fund!

DON’T procrastinate on your goals

Many of us set new years resolutions and yearly goals both for our professional and personal lives. Instead of giving up entirely, revisit your goals and see what is still achievable despite being and home, make a few tweaks and you may find yourself switching out some goals for new ones instead!

DON’T scroll through social media all day

This is really unproductive and although there are lots of informative and interesting pieces of content online, it will be more beneficial to reduce your screen time and spend time on a new/existing hobby instead!

DON’T cut your hair yourself if you don’t know what you’re doing!

With non-essential businesses closed you may have the urge to cut your overgrown fringe, or even restyle your whole hair because you’re annoyed/stressed/bored but DON’T do it! If you usually shave your hair then this is less of a problem as it will grow back quickly but otherwise wait it out or ask someone you live with (given you trust them more than yourself) to give you a trim. Having said that, I’m all for natural hair journeys and if it means cutting your hair as a reset button, go for it!

I hope this list provided you with more ideas on how to spend your time at home. At the end of the day, the goal is to stay happy & healthy so do whatever you need to so you can feel your best! Feel free to share any other ideas that have helped you throughout quarantine in the comments section!
